About Us
get.basketball is a brand developed by sports tech and marketing innovators ROAR with the aim of bringing the basketball world together online. Roar has endeavoured since 2011 to ensure that the sport of basketball has control of its digital identity online. Basketball is one of only 2 major sports that have control of their own name as a top level domain – the other is rugby, which Roar also manage through get.rugby
Roar is led by ex professional footballer Ryan Nelsen and Hamish Miller, a specialist in sports business and marketing. The vision is for .basketball is to be the online location for basketball at every level: nationally, internationally, club, age-group, 3×3, school, and for players, fans, coaches, referees, sponsors – the whole basketball family.
ROAR has developed a close working relationship with FIBA, the world governing body for the sport of basketball. FIBA are committed to partnering with get.basketball in rolling the .basketball domain out across the sport globally. This relationship was a key reason for ROAR being awarded the ownership and guardianship of the domain over large Wall Street funded investment companies. “We believed in what we were doing for the betterment of the sport,” said Miller. “Unlike others we wanted to make sure the rightful stakeholders got the rightful names.”
It was important to us that .basketball always follow these basic principals:
- Accessible to all levels within the sport
- Promote a sense of community within its users
- Do what we can to keep squatters and spammers out
- Create a digital space for all basketball-related activity online
More than just selling domains, ROAR and get.basketball are on a mission to accelerate the promotion of basketball entities, brands and individuals in a safe, secure and controlled environment. Get.basketball provides advice on digital and marketing strategies for basketball organisations of all sizes helping them grow themselves as well as the sport globally. Simply by using a .basketball domain you are immediately doing a better job at promoting what you do.
As FIBA’s Communications Director Patrick Koller said,
“This is a place where the whole basketball community can feel welcome, and which will only grow from here.”
